My Mom, the PhD

About

Key CMaj, Tempo 140

1984, College Station

Written for my future mother-in-law Barbara, back when she get her PhD. A very simple acoustic guitar progression that I added an equally simple country arrangement to (although I think there is a electric clavier in there somewhere, because at the time I was mixing this, I was really into the sound of a clavier). This was the song that made my mom jealous, and forced me to compose her song “Mom” in three days during Mother’s Day weekend.

Lyrically, I can’t figure out why I repeat, “You may not find a job, you may be unemployed” because to my knowledge, she has always been employed. I think it’s in there simply because “unemployed” rhymes with “void”.
