1978/May 2022
A portion of these lyrics are from 1978 when I was 15 years old – the chorus, and the spoken intro about sisters, aunts, and mothers. It is clear that at that tender age, women scared the crap out of me and that I had a very limited understanding of them. Most of the women I knew were family – sisters, aunts, mothers and grandmothers. I also had massive crushes on female musicians especially Ann Wilson from the band Heart. I remember seeing the band at the Summit in Houston. My seats were in the upper balcony (all I could afford as a lowly pizza maker), and I told everyone who would listen that during the concert when the lovely Ms. Wilson appeared on stage, I would leap down from the balcony, gather her in my arms, and convince her I was the only man who could make her happy. She would, of course, agree, and we would leave the arena and travel to a pastoral paradise where we’d live happily ever after…yeah…
I wrote the section about daughters and wives in 2022, long after I had become a father and husband, and knew a little more about those types of women. The reason I wanted to record the original lyrics combined with the new verses was that I think they do show massive respect and administration for the power and mystery of women, something I truly experience every day…
Musically I wanted to try composing in 3/4 time, and using a key (Cm) I had never used before. To me this has an Eastern European, gypsy feel to it, and I imagined myself playing it at a camp under a full moon with the scent of a spicy goulasch swirling in the air. It was composed entirely in Logic, using the software instruments and loops Apple provides.
