The Velvet Midnight

About

Key of E, tempo 112

1978

Another song from 1978 inspired by listening to too much Yes, Styx, and Queen. It was my early and humble attempt to write a suite, similar to what these bands were so good at (“Close to the Edge”, “Suite Madam Blue”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”). I do like the words, because they really capture the teenage romantic I was back in the day. You should probably be wary of any song that includes the word “Forevermore” multiple times with an echo effect applied…but I stand by my choices…

Out of all the songs in this set, I like the musical arrangement on this the best. To my ear, there is not a single “wrong” note. Things flow the way I heard them in my head. I still get chills when the first verse ends, and the drums and guitar kick in during the transition to the bridge. I probably tried every drum sound on the planet to get the version that’s in the final mix, and it was worth the effort (for me, at least). This is another song I can listen to again and again, and always find something to enjoy in it. But that’s just IMHO – I’m a little biased… The only criticism is that the uptempo bridge really needs a Golden God to wail those words, like “Havoc In My Blood“.
